Alison was a little in awe of having Italian guests judging her cooking, but she did very well!
Although yesterday’s stage had not been too energy-consuming and the night very restful, we both felt quite tired and tackled the Welsh ‘muretti’ (= small roads bordered by hedges with gradients well above 15%) at a slow pace.
We arrive in Blaenavon, a village where coal used to be mined, and dash into a (sad) market for a couple of tuna sandwiches.
From here on, the trail gets wilder: we climb to the top of a hill, elevation 450 m, belonging to the mining complex, and then descend on a nice path with a grassy and pitiful surface at the same time to the small village of “Penicellin” (it’s actually Pontsticill, but I like to rename everything) where a stop at the local pub is a must, since we’ve been wanting to have a coffee all morning.
Since it is 2.30 pm, we also think about getting a sandwich, but Mara ‘goes the extra mile’ and opts for a Beef Burger, accompanied by fries. Can I be outdone? Obviously not, so I go for a nice Cheeseburger.
Let’s overlook the Fantozzi-like choice of drinks: non-alcoholic beer for Mara, which cost us the enmity of the whole place (the only bottle they had was probably used to hold a door shut), and Fanta with peach and maracuja for me.
Karma punished us atrociously for this, preventing us from drinking the much-coveted coffee: the machine was broken.
Plenty of refreshments, we set off again for the last big effort of the day, a Coppi peak of no less than 650 metres with a very bumpy bottom, but which we manage to pedal anyway. Beyond the mountain pass, the downhill is no less, damp and very stony, which does not spare our poor bikes.
However, the view is breathtaking, somewhat reminiscent of our Apennine ridges, just green meadows without trees.
At the bottom of the descent we find a delightful surprise: another quaint pub full of rowdy regulars where we are gladly served two half-litre mugs of coffee!
That’s all we needed to ride the last ‘dentino’ and arrive at the campsite-farm, where a very kind lady welcomed us with beers and homemade cakes, even letting us park our bikes in the lambs’ crate.
Tomorrow we have a hard day ahead of us, at least 110 km to go.

But, in the end, what does ‘Araf’ mean? It means ‘slow’, the term that suited us best today.

[ITA]

[ITALIANO di seguito] I had heard that they had a very strong dialect in Wales, but I had no idea that they even needed bilingual signs. Our hosts last night explained that it is the oldest ‘active’ (=not dead) language in Europe, part of the Celtic languages. The words are very strange and I believe that when …

[28
