Even Nostradamus predicted it: abnormal heatwave in Wales for Sunday 6 August. Caribbean sun and temperatures. Sunscreen 1000 essential.
We opened the door of the bothy where we comfortably slept with this hope, but alas, it’s raining.
I at least managed during the night to dry the tent by stretching it on the ‘minimal’ clothesline given to me by my big brother who twice saved my life, but everything else that was wet yesterday, is and will be wet today.
Bundled up again like divers, we say goodbye to our English friends and set off, immediately uphill.
Fortunately, a few kilometres of forest and we are back on the road and shortly after there is a service station with a mini-market where we have our second breakfast.
A small side road stretches into a beautiful valley, skirting a river whose waters have been trapped by a dam and while we are rejoicing at the very smooth bottom, we run into a gate and from there on, delirium.
We continue on a rutted track, made even more complicated by the rain, rivulets of water everywhere.
The icing on the cake: a ford that would require stripping down to your underwear, but I spot a little higher up a small bridge.
“Let’s go there, it’s better!”
First: there is another ford to get there and I fall in.
Second: my front wheel sinks stuck in the mud and I fall in.
Thirdly, after crossing the bridge, it is a delirium of water-soaked moss on all sides.
In half an hour we manage to cover 15 metres.
Somehow we regain the ‘road’ which, apart from several huge puddles, is passable from there on.
At lunchtime we arrive in Macchill\u00e8 (Machynlleth), a pleasant little town where a lady recommends a caf\u00e9 with good food. Hungry as hell, we go for a beef burger + baked potato.
After lunch we decide to make a couple of changes to the tour, so that we arrive at our destination a little earlier, so we set off on a secondary tarmac road that leads us into the jaws of the dragon: a climb of 500 metres in less than 2km.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
We arrive at the top exhausted, but the view is fabulous and the subsequent descent allows us to relax a little, also thanks to the shy sun that has come out in the meantime.
The exertions are not over, however, as there are still 600 metres of altitude to go.
During the last climb, some motorcyclists overtake us, urging us on.
We find them stopped and then they pass us again, each time waving to each other.
This is one of the most beautiful aspects of travelling on two wheels, the friendship and solidarity that exists between ‘colleagues’, something you never experience travelling by car.
We arrive without too much trouble in Bala, where, with a little insistence, I manage to get us a pitch for just 10 pounds. Nothing.

Anche Nostradamus l’aveva predetto: onda di caldo anomalo in Galles per domenica 6 Agosto. Sole e temperature caraibiche. Crema solare protezione 1000 indispensabile.
Abbiamo aperto la porta del bothy dove abbiamo comodamente dormito con questa speranza, ma, ahinoi, piove.
Sono almeno riuscito durante la notte a far asciugare la tenda stendendola (o tendendola?) al filo per i panni “minimal” regalatomi dal mio fratellone che per ben due volte mi ha salvato la vita, ma tutto il resto delle cose che ieri erano bagnate, lo sono e saranno oggi.
Imbacuccati un’altra volta come palombari salutiamo i nostri amici inglesi e partiamo, subito in salita.
Per fortuna pochi chilometri di bosco e si rientra in strada e poco dopo c’\u00e8 una stazione di servizio con minimarket dove facciamo la seconda colazione.
Una stradina secondaria si allunga in una valle bellissima, costeggiando un fiume le cui acque sono state intrappolate da una diga e mentre ci stiamo rallegrando per il fondo molto scorrevole, incappiamo in un cancello e da l\u00ec in poi, il delirio.
Si prosegue su una traccia scassata, resa ancora pi\u00f9 complicata dalla pioggia, rivoli d’acqua ovunque.
Ciliegina sulla torta: un guado che richiederebbe di spogliarsi fino alle mutande, ma avvisto poco pi\u00f9 in alto un ponticino.
“Andiamo l\u00e0, \u00e8 meglio!”
Primo: c’\u00e8 un altro guado per arrivarci e ci cado dentro.
Secondo: la ruota davanti mi affonda bloccata nel fango e ci cado dentro.
Terzo: oltrepassato il ponte \u00e8 un delirio di muschio inzuppato d’acqua da tutte le parti.
In mezz’ora riusciamo a percorrere 15 metri.
In qualche modo riguadagnamo la “strada” che, a parte parecchie pozzanghere enormi, \u00e8 da l\u00ec in poi percorribile.
All’ora di pranzo arriviamo a Macchill\u00e8 (Machynlleth), ridente cittadina dove una signora ci consiglia un caff\u00e8 dove si mangia bene. La fame \u00e8 da lupi, ci spariamo beef burger + baked potato.
Dopo pranzo decidiamo di fare un paio di modifiche al giro, in modo da arrivare un po’ prima a destinazione, perci\u00f2 ci mettiamo in marcia su una strada asfaltata secondaria che ci guida nelle fauci del drago: una salita che in meno di 2km sale di 500 metri.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Arriviamo in cima stremati, ma il panorama \u00e8 favoloso e la discesa successiva ci permette di rilassarci un po’, anche grazie al timido sole che nel frattempo \u00e8 sbucato.
Le fatiche non sono per\u00f2 terminate, dato che mancano ancora 600 metri di dislivello.
Durante l’ultima salita ci sorpassano dei motociclisti che ci incitano ad andare avanti.
Li ritroviamo fermi e poi ci sorpassano di nuovo, ogni volta salutandoci l’un l’altro.
Questo \u00e8 uno degli aspetti pi\u00f9 belli del viaggiare su due ruote, ovvero l’amicizia e solidariet\u00e0 che c’\u00e8 tra “colleghi”, una cosa che non si prova mai viaggiando in auto.
Arriviamo senza troppi problemi a Bala, dove, insistendo un po’, riesco a farci fare una piazzola a soli 10 pounds. Nulla.
