I was almost worried that I would have nothing interesting to write about, but instead….
Over lunch in the only village with shops and cafes, we decided that we could make it to Haltwhistle, on the edge of Hadrian’s Wall where there are several shops and campsites.
The biggest effort was the climb up the ‘Green Castle’ mountain to an altitude of almost 800 metres, but from there on there would be several kilometres of descent.
Painstakingly we gain the summit and the view is truly breathtaking: some of the slopes are green, others tend more towards brown because of the shrubs, others still towards purple.
All the colours are slightly desaturated by the partly overcast sky.
That’s it, now we can set off downhill, but… the path crosses a marshy area.
As long as there is an incline, there are no major problems, apart from a few fords to be crossed carefully, but when it becomes flatter, there start to be several pools with mud that suck our wheels. We have to do many stretches on foot, jumping here and there to try not to disappear forever in the black bog and end up like Artex, Atreyu’s horse in the Neverending Story.
It takes us an hour and a half to cover four kilometres, but the road finally improves: we have emerged unscathed, but covered in mud up to our ears.
We would like to phone our chosen campsite, but there is no line.
When we finally manage to do so, we find that it is too late and no one answers.
After several attempts, we manage to find one, but the lady only waits until 9 p.m., so we have to run.
Fortunately, the track returns to asphalt, which, apart from the usual ‘bumps’, runs smoothly.
The last few miles are on the path of a former railway and suddenly we arrive in front of what used to be the station, but a gentleman stops us resentfully because we are treading on his grass: we are in his garden.
Eventually he is polite and explains that they were supposed to make a signposted diversions of the cycle path, but it was never built.
He accompanies us to the exit of his property and opens the gate for us, directly on a viaduct, fabulous!
We split up: Mara will provide dinner and I get to the campsite in time.
The last stretch is deadly, with several hairpin bends above 20%, but I grit my teeth and even arrive before 8pm.
The campsite is very nice and the lady very kind.
The tent is set up and Mara has arrived, also exhausted, but dinner is soon prepared and we can cheer ourselves up with even a piece of chocolate cake and this time we have beers!

[ITA]

[ITALIANO di seguito] Slightly tumultuous night at the Philpin Farm campsite, partly due to the tent neighbour snoring loudly, partly due to my sleeping mat that keeps deflating, despite being repaired. We have breakfast in the ‘barn’ (literally ‘hut’), exchanging a few words with the various onlookers. At 8.30 a.m. we are already in the saddle; today …

[28
