The title is very pompous and worthy of a Jules Verne story, but this is far from science fiction\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n
We very happily left the campsite at the Biggar golf club. The place was nice, right at a small lake amidst big oaks and surrounded by the golf course, but the facilities (toilets mainly) were dirty and dilapidated.
Pet luckily we only spent 10 pounds.
On today’s menu there are quite a few kilometres, a good 140, but they turn out to be very smooth and a bit boring, passing through post-industrial or mining towns all the same.
We stop in one of these for our second breakfast\/lunch (the more ‘fancy’ would call it brunch) at the ‘Hot Stuff’ bar.
Having left satiated, we climb several hills and then descend in the direction of a more urbanised area where we see a narrow waterway similar to the one seen in Wales days ago where, via a lock, boats can change levels.
We walk along the waterway, which even leads into a tunnel illuminated by coloured lights.
After a few dutiful photos, coming out the other side of the tunnel, we realise that the canal ends in nothingness\u2026. possible?
Evidently so! At that point, the drop to overcome is at least 50 metres and a lock system would not have worked, so they invented a real lift!
The vessels enter a sort of tank that is rotated and raised in a sort of drum, similar to what happens to the bullet in a drum gun.
I had never seen such a machine, as simple as it is complex.
It really left me speechless.
We finally reached Stirling, a beautiful little town located right in the middle of Scotland.
The last 30 km are quite tough, the usual up and down, similar to those in Wales.
A snag on the horizon: the campsite we want to get to doesn’t answer and the one in the village before is full.
We decide to try anyway: Mara goes shopping for dinner and I go to the campsite in person, where by begging the lady I manage to get a pitch.
Tonight too we sleep in luxury, tomorrow we will see\u2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Il titolo \u00e8 molto pomposo e degno di un racconto di Jules Verne, ma questa \u00e8 tutt’altro che fantascienza\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Abbandoniamo molto volentieri il campeggio al golf club di Biggar. Il posto era carino, direttamente su un laghetto in mezzo a grosse querce e circondato dal campo da golf, ma le strutture (bagni principalmente) erano sporche e fatiscenti.
Pet fortuna abbiamo speso solo 10 pounds.
Sul menu di oggi ci sono un bel po’ di chilometri, ben 140, ma si rivelano essere molto scorrevoli ed un po’ noiosi, attraversando paesi post-industriali o minerari tutti uguali.
Ci fermiamo in uno di questi per la seconda colazione\/pranzo (i pi\u00f9 “fancy” lo chiamerebbero brunch) al bar “Hot Stuff”.
Ripartiti sazi saliamo diverse colline per poi scendere in direzione di una zona pi\u00f9 urbanizzata dove scorgiamo uno stretto canale navigabile simile a quello visto in Galles giorni fa dove, tramite una chiusa, le imbarcazioni possono cambiare di livello.
Costeggiamo il corso d’acqua che si immette addirittura dentro ad un tunnel illuminato da luci colorate.
Dopo qualche doverosa foto, uscendo dall’altra parte della galleria, ci accorgiamo che il canale finisce nel nulla\u2026 possibile?
Evidentemente s\u00ec! In quel punto il dislivello da superare \u00e8 di almeno 50 metri ed un sistema di chiuse non avrebbe funzionato ed allora si sono inventati un vero e proprio ascensore!
Le imbarcazioni entrano in una sorta di vasca che viene ruotata e sollevata in una sorta di tamburo, simile a quello che succede al proiettile in una pistola a tamburi, appunto. Sembra quasi che violino!
Non avevo mai visto un macchinario del genere, tanto semplice quanto complesso.
Mi ha lasciato veramente a bocca aperta.
Giungiamo finalmente a Stirling, bella cittadina situata proprio in mezzo alla Scozia, peccato non avere il tempo di visitarla a dovere\u2026
Gli ultimi 30 km sono abbastanza tosti, sempre i soliti su e gi\u00f9, simili a quelli del Galles.
Un imprevisto all’orizzonte: il campeggio dove vogliamo arrivare non ci risponde e quello al paese prima \u00e8 pieno.
Decidiamo comunque di provare: Mara fa spesa per la cena ed io vado di persona al campeggio, dove pregando la signora riesco a farmi dare una piazzola.
Anche stasera si dorme nel lusso, domani si vedr\u00e0\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n
